Pikangikum First Nation

Repairs to water treatment plant underway

Project tracker

Projected lift date: TBD

Pikangikum First Nation in Ontario is home to 3,296 people on reserve. A project to repair the water treatment plant is underway, with funding from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).

There is 1 long-term drinking water advisory affecting 20 homes and 36 community buildings:

  • a boil water advisory was set on the Pikangikum Public Water System in February 2024 and became long term in February 2025

The advisory is in place due to a chemical feed pump failure. Pikangikum First Nation developed an action plan to repair the water treatment plant and is working with ISC to implement their plan.

Once the issue is fixed and water sampling is completed, the community should be able to lift the advisory.

Operational support is being provided through the Water and Wastewater Support Service Hub delivered by the Independent First Nations Alliance (IFNA) Tribal Council and funded by ISC.
