Rainy River First Nations

Repairs to water treatment plant underway

Project tracker

Projected lift date: December 2025

Home to 472 people on reserve, Rainy River First Nations in Ontario is upgrading and expanding their water treatment plant, with funding from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).

There is 1 long-term drinking water advisory affecting 107 homes and 5 community buildings:

  • a boil water advisory for the Rainy River Public Water System was set in February 2024 and became long-term in February 2025

The advisory was initially put in place due to low water pressure from a water main break, which has been repaired. However, the existing plant cannot meet the needs of the community. The community developed an action plan to upgrade and expand their existing water treatment plant and work is underway, with support from ISC. This project is expected to be complete by August 2025.

Once complete, the community should be in a position to lift the advisory. In the short-term, community members have access to clean drinking water through truck delivery.
