Slate Falls Nation

Repairs to the water treatment system completed; operational challenges being addressed

Project tracker

Projected lift date: TBD

Located in northwestern Ontario, Slate Falls Nation is home to over 250 people on reserve.

There is 1 long-term drinking water advisory affecting approximately 60 homes and 5 community buildings:

  • A boil water advisory for the Slate Falls Public Water System was issued in June 2023 and became long-term in June 2024.

Initially, an advisory was put in place due to a power surge that caused damage to some plant equipment and a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Windigo Hub, funded by Indigenous Services Canada, assisted the community in completing repairs to the water system after the power surge and additional repairs after a major line break in the distribution system in February 2024.

Infrastructure is in place that can produce clean drinking water. The advisory remains in place due to ongoing operational challenges. A training plan for the community’s water operator is being developed with support from the Windigo Hub. Once additional training is complete, the community should be able to lift the advisory.
