Construction of water treatment plant upgrade and expansion underway

Project tracker:

Projected lift date: October 2025

Mathias Colomb Cree Nation in Manitoba is home to 2,223 people. The community is upgrading and expanding their water treatment plant to meet long-term water needs.

There is 1 long-term drinking water advisory affecting 366 homes and 14 community buildings:

Infrastructure is in place that can produce clean drinking water. Issues with an existing sewage lift station and the potential for wastewater overflows created concerns about the safety of the drinking water. Through the First Nation led design process, it was agreed that a water treatment plant upgrade and expansion would address these concerns, as well as the community's long-term water needs, instead of replacing the existing lift station. The issues with the existing lift station do not have a direct impact on drinking water quality.

Construction of the upgrade and expansion, which includes a new pumping station, is underway. Extreme cold weather, supply chain issues and site conditions have all delayed the project. Once the work is complete, the community should be able to lift the advisory.
