Sandy Lake First Nation in Ontario is home to 2,687 people living on reserve. The community upgraded and expanded their water treatment plant and distribution system, with funding from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
There is 1 long-term drinking water advisory affecting 400 homes and 15 community buildings:
- a boil water advisory for the Sandy Lake Water System was set in October 2002 and became long-term in October 2003
Interim upgrades were completed in July 2020 and long-term upgrades to the water treatment plant and distribution system were completed in late 2023. Infrastructure is in place that can produce clean drinking water.
The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation Centralized Water and Wastewater Hub, funded by ISC, has been supporting local operators with daily operations and water monitoring in the community. Operational challenges have been addressed. A recommendation to lift the advisory was issued to chief and council in July 2024 and is under consideration by the First Nation.
